Virus Infection?

I have a pc running XP Pro SP2 which is acting up. It is impossible to make hidden files and folders visible. Most spyware and Antivirus software either hangs or refuses to start and some other programs will not start.

I am fairly sure that there is or has been a virus causing this as a HijackThis log shows this..

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

I can post the whole log if necessary but for starters I have just shown the part that seems most relevant..

It is proving impossible to remove them using HJ even in Safe Mode.

Any idea's what could be causing this and the best way to remove it?
