I can boot from my CD rom, but I don't have a floppy drive.
The preinstalled recovery tools on the IBM R51 will reinstall XP and the other preinstalled software and wipe out the exiting hard drive , but there is no option to repair XP.
How can I boot from my CD drive and repair Windows?

Problem with Johnb6767's suggestion is you need an XP Pro SP1 or later CD to do that. If you have the CD, I STRONGLY recommend UBCD4WIN over the recovery console. Without it, repair is difficult. You can recover data using a Linux LiveCD, but that can't write to the NTFS drive.
Barrow an XP CD for a friend.
Why not just use a linux live cd to recover data and then use the restore discs that came with the laptop ?
I mean unless you are trying to keep all the applications that you have on the laptop installed etc.
Just as a daft thought what about either pressing F8 before windows starts and using last known good configuration.
Short of that did it have system restore enabled or not ?
If so then what about using a restore point, I cant remember if you can use system restore in safe mode ( That is if you can get into safe mode ? )
If you go here :
http://www.shockfamily.net
That shows you how to make an ntfs drive writeable and explains a lot which should help you, It is on my profile along with another URL which shows you how to fix the ntfs file system ( or something along those lines ) if it goes tits up which is on this url :
http://www.retosphere.de/t
It says this regarding NTFS write support on that site :
Anyway, the NTFS write support is currently in development. On the Knoppix-CD also is the package ntfs-tools, which contains ntfsfix.
Due to the development status of the NTFS-Linux Project, write support of NTFS could corrupt the NTFS-filesystem which is written.
ntfsfix marks the partition and when Windows boots again, it will check the disk (chkdsk) automatically, which is exactly what we could not do before because Windows hung just before.
However Version 5 does support it, look here :
