Question

Disabling USB Disconnection Warning

Asked by: agubaira

Hi,

I currently have an external usb hard drive attached to my computer for scheduled backups. However other users also work with their pendrives on this machine. When they use the system's tray disconnection dialog, they accidently disconnect the hd.

How can I eliminate this utility from the system tray *and* the disconnection warning that pops up when a USB device is extracted without disconnection ? In other words I want to eliminate the possibility of the hd being disconnected.

Thanks,
Antonio

Hi Antonio,
Try this.
Go down to the Systray part and press the "Customize" button in the lower righthand corner. You may select any systray icon and set it to be always hidden.

how do you eliminate the possiblility of the HD being disconnected...... ummmm.... superglue the plug into the usb port..... lol.

Hi younghv,

Your solution is the best so far, however I would be prefer to acomplish the same but dealing perhaps with the registry. Someone could unhide the icon with the systray properties.

jimmymcp02, I also went through your solution before but when I extract the usb device without disconnection the warning dialog enables the icon on the tray by default.

((mluther223, what superglue brand do you suggest ????))

You can disable the system tray using this registry hack:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Name: NoTrayItemsDisplay
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1 Hide

Sorry, but that was the closest registry hack I could find.

Hey I found another registry hack! Mabye this would be more useful.

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Name: NoTrayItemsDisplay
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0 default
Value: 1 enable restriction

by: ruijietanPosted on 2006-11-18 at 04:57:02ID: 17971250

Oh sorry I forgot to tell you what the second hack would do. It restricts access to the system try but you can still see it.

Hi ruijietan,

None of the hacks worked for me. Did you test them ?

Thanks
