Question

IE 7 Keeps My Computer From Fully Booting

Asked by: sjaguar13

I tried installing IE 7 before, and all it did was screw up my computer. It can get to the Windows logo, but before it's fully booted, it will restart. This just keeps going. It gets to the logo and restarts over, and over, and over. I let it go for over an hour and that's all it could do. I ended up formating and reinstalling Windows XP Pro. All was fine until Automatic Updates wanted to install it again. I tried it, and the same thing happened. Is there a reason this is happening, and how do I stop it?

Something in the IE7 install doesnt like your hardware.  On a fresh install, the only thing I can see that would cause a crash like that from an application, is either HDD corruption, or a bad driver somewhere.

Personally, I would disable Automatic updates, and in IE6>Tools>Options>Advanced>Uncheck Check for Internet Explorer Updates.

Can you get into safe mode when it is trying to reboot on you?

by: sjaguar13Posted on 2006-11-27 at 22:22:47ID: 18025718

Nope, no safe mode, no Last Good Configuration, no anything.

I am going to try to get the updates I need, but skipping the IE 7 upgrade.

I installed just 10 of the 64 critical updates, and when I rebooted, it asked me for my account password, but I don't have one. Should I just stay away for all critical updates?

by: sakuya_suPosted on 2006-11-28 at 02:43:53ID: 18026716

if you dont have a account password you can jsut hit enter.

Anyway, the computer restarts on critical error, so you dont actualy see what the error is, press f8 when computer starts, then in the Windows XP boot menu, chose something called disable automatic restart on critical errors. now you will get a blue screen, if you can tell us the error code then we should be able to tell you whats happened.

by: sjaguar13Posted on 2006-11-28 at 03:03:18ID: 18026777

I tired hitting enter and I got an error, something about the length wasn't long enough for the procedure called.

I will reinstall IE7 and try to get the error to show up.

by: sakuya_suPosted on 2006-11-28 at 05:00:22ID: 18027314

yeah, because although skipping IE7 would avoid the error we will never know what is wrong

"press f8 when computer starts, then in the Windows XP boot menu, chose something called disable automatic restart on critical errors."

Were you able to get it to Blu screen as sakuya_su asked?

by: sjaguar13Posted on 2006-11-30 at 09:05:39ID: 18046874

I right-clicked on my computer>properties>advanced tab>startup and recovery and unchecked the automatic reboot. When I installed the updates, I did get the blue screen error. Searching for it on Google found a discussion board where someone identifies the problem hotfix and gives instructions on how to remove it.

After I removed it, I got the same problem with the login. That was also mentioned including what causes it. After following those instructions, Windows boots, but can't really do anything. There is no explorer or systemtray. The instructions say to use the restore point to get the computer back up and running. This works, but cancels every update.

One guy points out that these errors only happen on earlier versions of SP2 (2055 and 2096). After upgrading to the final release of SP2, I was able to upgrade everything without any problems.

I couldn't have done it without sakuya_su telling me why my computer kept restarting.
