two things impossible
1. there is no box to check or uncheck
2. there is no entry in the Add/Remove Progs, which is why it fails to begin with-- an update can't update something that isn't there.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsIn the past few days, something triggered the idea on this WinXP PC that it needs an update to the MS Java VM stuff. I don't know why and I don't care why at this point.
I have the latest Java junk loaded from Sun and I shouldn't need anything from MS on this. But, I get that goofy little icon down in the system tray that says that "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates." If that were the end of it, I would be a lot happier. However, I go through the motions of allowing it to do its thing. When it gets to the end, it states that it can't load the update unless it has a previous version of the MS Java VM to update. Then it wants a re-boot. After a re-boot, thing are calm until the Automatic WindowsUpdate process kicks in once again starting up the same process that is doomed to failure. It just won't go away.
Would someone please tell me how to stop this requirement from getting in my business? If it requires a registry tweak, fine. If it requires deleting some unneeded files somewhere under the Windows folder subsystem, fine. I just haven't had this happen before and I'd like this annoyance gone.
Re-formatting the hard drive is not something I'm considering since there is so much on this system that I don't hasve time to re-create. However, that did cross my mind.
Thanks in advance for any solution to this annoying problem.

Sounds like you have the option for automatically downloading updates but notifying you only when they are ready to install. You can use the instructions on this page to set the option for notifying you when updates are ready for downloading first and then notifying you when they are ready to install. Then when you are taken to the Windows Update site, decline the unwanted Java update.

HOW TO: Configure and Use Automatic Updates in Windows XP
The relevant passage in the above page:
Turn On and Use Automatic Updates
To turn on Automatic Updates for your computer:
Open Control Panel, and then double-click System.
Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select the Keep my computer up to date. With this setting enabled, Windows Update software may be automatically updated prior to applying any other updates. check box.
Click one of the following options:
Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computer. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to search for downloads from the Windows Update Web site. An Automatic Updates icon and message appear in the notification area of your Taskbar when new updates are available to download or install. Click the icon or message to view the updates. If you don't want to download a selected update, click to clear the check box next to that update to decline it.
I have not yet read the last two posts you folks haved made.
The High Priority update involved is the following:
816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
There is no checkbox to decline it.
I have turned off Automatic WindowsUpdate so it wouldn't force inform me again. I then went to the WindowsUpdate site and asked it to do its thing via the Express mode. That one showed up again and, of course, it already knows I've downloaded it. So, it just wants to install it. At the end of the installation portion, it fails as I have seen at least half a dozen times now and wants to re-boot. I have not yet re-booted so I can post this "progress" here. That icon has now magically shown up again, even though I now have Automatic Updates turned off. It won't go away easily.
I understand re-setting the method of how I get notified about Updates from MS. Since that only treats the symptom, the problem still remains if I decide to go full Automatic. That update will rear its ugly head again, won't it? Or does telling it I don't want it in the reduced inform-me mode get that update out of the way pretty much forever?
I have just set Automatic Updates to notify me first before downloading. That one came up again as part of the system tray notification. I de-selected it in the subsequent dialog and it went away happy. So, for the time being it shouldn't bother me.
So, back to my other question... is this just hiding the symptom and not curing the cause? Will it show up again (I can test it, I suppose) if I change my Automatic Updates setting to download and install everything?
I have a thought......
Go to a command prompt and type
jview
if it returns something similar to
H:\>jview
Microsoft (R) Command-line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1996-2000. All rights reserved.
Then I would allow the update. Just because you have Sun, and dont need the MSJVM, doesnt mean you want to leave it wide open....I would simply uninstall the MSJVM

No. I will NOT allow the update again. As I posted above, it fails when I allow the update and says it can't apply an update until there is something to update.
I don't know exactly what triggered this on this PC. But, it is a false need.
Now, on to re-enable full Automatic Updates to see if MS will torture me once again with trying to get me to install something that will fail and is not needed. What a PITA.
There never was a component to remove.
Anyhow, changing the mode of AutomaticUpdate to notify me only when there is an update, needed or not, has allowed me to deselect that bad boy and it does not come back in the mix again unless I explicitly tell it to restore it at the WindowsUpdate site.
Out of curiosity, I would love to know where this stuff is stored on the hard drive. ????

two things
1. when the bubble pops up asking which updates you want to install...uncheck the box for javaVM and check the box for 'dont show me again'
2. Add/Remove Progs remove MSJavaVM
