Removing a File Association

Hi, I have accidently associated a file type BAK to always use Notepad. The BAK file will now always open using Notepad. Is there a way to dis-associate files from the program, so that when I double click the BAK file, it will display the Open With dialogbox?

Thanks.

Changing File Associations

You can change the default file association with these simple steps.
1.      Single-click a file.
2.      Hold the Shift key while right-clicking the file.
3.      Select "Open With..."  NOTE With Windows ME, you will have to select the option to "Choose Program".

4.      Select a program.
5.      Place a check mark next to "Always use this program to open this type of file" if you want to permanently change its file association. Otherwise, this will be a one-time solution.
6.      Click OK.

OR

You can also change file associations from the "Tools" menu in Windows Explorer by selecting "Folder Options" then the "File Types" tab. (In Windows 95 this option is located under the "View" menu)

Yes, although my question was about dis-associating a file from an existing file type?

Oh, make sure in step #4, you need to select BAK before you proceed to step #5.

Hmm, I had been looking all over File Types for an answer but for some reason the BAK extension wasn't listed at the time. Must have been my slow machine.

Your instructions worked like a charm!
Thanks.
Take PeteLong's solution. This will clear the associatiion and the file type.
Then
1.  Open My Computer
2.  Click on "Tools" menu, "Folder Options"
3.  Select "File Types" and click "New" to set up a new association.
4.  Type the file extension that was just deleted
5.  Next click "Advanced" and set the "Associated File Type" as <New> and click "OK" to apply.

Hope this helps
