How to delete data safely from the HDD?

Is there really a such thing like deleting data off you HDD safely using a software? If I need to sell my computer with hard drive that contained very confidential private files and project isn't better just to keep the drive and destroy it physically to be 100% that nobody did his best to recover deleted files?
