Question

Cannot play AVI files in Windows Media Player 10 & 11￿

Asked by: ianmal2

This is a problem on a friend’s computer.  He used to be ale to play AVI files but cannot now (but cannot remember the circumstances).  I have tried many different AVI files from different sources.  The result is always the same, the file loads but nothing happens.  The first frame is displayed but will not play.

He has recently upgraded to version 11 but he says it was like this in version 10 (that’s why he upgraded as he thought it might fix the problem).

I have uninstalled codecs, installed various codec packs.  The result is always the same.

However the files will play in a DivX player.  So that is the short term solution.

All files will play perfectly in WMP on my own computer.  I have tried to install same codecs on friend’s computer but result is always the same.

Gspot indicates everything is fine with the file but will not play the file either?

Any ideas?

Is using a restore point an option? If so, try to restore back to a date before this problem began to see if that will play the avi files again.

Otherwise, you might want to try using the system file checker to see if it can find anything wrong since you already tried reinstalling the codecs already...

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

I assume he doesn't want to use another media player to play the avi files right? Otherwise, he can take a look at VLC Player also.

Im assuming the drivers are incorrect for this not to work.

Download this: http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

Once installed, any version of media player will be capable of playing many formats such as avi. mpeg, flv etc without any drama's.

cheers.

have you tried the most simple and obvious the file association
in WMP tools options Files types and make sure the AVI is ticked?
But this is your key>>However the files will play in a DivX player
If they are DIVX then WMP will not like them.
Divx encodes them.
What is DivX®

---------------------------------------------------------------
Use  a divx player but you probably already have one
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
and this one plays Divx as well
Media player classic:
Please read the info on this page

install ffdshow as well this will give you all the codecs support

You'll understand why a lot of folks donot  not use WMP  after reading this.
It supports quite a few formats but not all of them and then only gives you a lot of pain of course it belongs to Microsoft porducts and all MS products never just play you have to own a liscence DRM and add so many extras just to play something.
It does NOT support DIVX.

Please remember that all the AVI files will play in WMP on another computer with same OS and WMP version.

Even though they have same operating system amd media player etc dvx player
If these  divx AVI were made on your PC  they will have a higher chance of playing successfully.
Is your friend playing these off the HDD or cd? DVD as data?

Does your friend have all the divx codecs installed?
Often times when creating divx movies you get a few more codecs and compression tools
I see you have run G Spot and found no problems.
So lets look at what he not installed and how is he accessing  these divx avi.
DivX® movies are commonly stored in Windows .avi files. In order to play back these video files, you will need to install the appropriate software components known as the DivX® codec (stands for compressor/decompressor) on your computer.

look at my previous post, down the codec pack and it will solve all your issues.

it will allow WMP to play just about every format around from avi, divx, mpeg, dvd, mp3, mp4, flv.

just a note as I use divx for all my movies but donot use WMP,
for the purposes of this question>>
I tried playing one of my DIVX in WMP 10 by drag and drop as I always do,
and no response from WMP at all.
So then I went to to File >open>And it says in the file types options Media files (all Types) and navigated to my divx movie folder and it didnt see files.
so I looked down the list of file types options  and found at the bottom Any File (*.*)< sorta like that selected that
and then I could see all the divx movies, so I clicked on one then a message>> the selected file has an extension that is not recognised by windows media player, but the player may still be able to play it, Because the extension is unknown by the player you should be sure it comes from a trustworthy source.
Do you want the player to try to play this file?
YES
Tick Dont ask me again for this extension.

So divx play in WMP on my machien now.
