Question

IE7 fails to access Internet while Firefox 2.0 has no problem

Asked by: Guy2

Hi,

I have had a series of problems with Firefox and IE (on Windows XP SP2).  When one was working the other was not.  I noticed it when Firefox 2.0.1 stopped working but IE 7 worked.  I reinstalled Firefox 2.0 thinking that the problem might be with the newer version of Firefox.  Firefox worked.  Today, Firefox automatically installed the newer 2.0.1 version.  I reinstalled 2.0 but then I noticed that IE 7 didn't work.  I reinstalled IE 7 and rebooted to no avail.  IE 7 says that either the internet connection is not available, the web site has problems (I tried with several sites with the same results) or there is a typo in the URL (not the case).  I ran the network diagnostics which gave me the results at the end of this message.  Another application on my machine, msgtag reported "socket error 11004".

Any idea?

Thanks,

Guy

It may also be a firewall problem. What firewall are you using?

In response to the firewall question, I 'm not using a firewall on my PC but there is one on the router connecting to the DSL line.  I have the same problem at home and at the office (different routers and ISPs and DNS servers).  However, I don't see how the firewall could be an issue as Firefox 2.0 does work and is presumably using the same firewall.

Hi Guys,

I found the problem.  Unbeknownst to me, a co-worker had changed my IE connection parameters to try and use a proxy server ... and had left the "bad" parameters (which are not readily apparent when you look at the connection tab in IE options).  I withdraw the question.

Apologies
