Windows update failing to install

I have a system that fails to install 2 separate windows updates.
- MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)
- MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)

It keeps going through the motions as if it is installing, but doesn't.  Is is in his system as installed 3 or 4 times.

Any clues?

Thanks

1) You are attempting this from an administrative account?
2) Have you restarted the computer and tried installing?
3) Close as many apps as you can as well.

Also -- when you say in his system "installed 3 or 4 times"

-- it reports as failed on the update history?
-- it reports as installed in UPDATES in ADD / REMOVE software?

Dragonjim -
1) yes, the user account is in the local admin group
2) yes, the pc was restarted numerous times
3) close practically everything possible

- on the microsoft update page, where you review update history, it shows that it succeeded 5 times each.  This shows up once a day for both, from 1/5 to 1/9

Interesting.

doubt it is related -- but to be on the safe side ... have software firewalls (zone alarm, etc) been disabled throughout the install?

If an update is interupted it will attempt to redownload and install?
Any indication anything might be blocking the installation?

It goes through motions of installing... I'd rather ask this and get the expected 'no' than assume:
--- computer in question is not running the shared resource toolkit w/ disk protection?
--- or other disk protection (DeepFreeze, Centurion Technologies products, etc)?

True,

The few times I've had to get them on the phone - they are very direct and resolutions quick (10 minutes).
