If it was an UpperFilters/LowerFilters issue, you'd find those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ ControlSet 001\Contro l\Class\{4 D36E965-E3 25-11CE-BF C1-08002BE 10318}
And yes, it could be a filter causing the problem, the drive itself going bad (or maybe just the lens being too dirty), or some kind of DRM being installed (such as for a game or music cd).
