Laptop lost ability to read cd roms (500 pts)

I have a user with a windows xp sp2 laptop. It is slightly older I believe it is a Latitude C class. The cd rom drive worked about 203 months ago when the machine was formatted and upgraded to XP.

The user can not read any cd's wether they are originals or copies. The strange thing about it is the computer can still recognize the drive if you uninstall it and then scan for hardware changes. The laptop can also eject the cd rom drive if you right click on the cd icon and hit eject.

I am not sure but I kind of remember a similar problem and solving it by using regedit and changing some key for filtering or something.

Im not sure thats the solution but Im looking for any suggestions before buying a new drive.

If it was an UpperFilters/LowerFilters issue, you'd find those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

And yes, it could be a filter causing the problem, the drive itself going bad (or maybe just the lens being too dirty), or some kind of DRM being installed (such as for a game or music cd).

I don't think it's a UpperFilters or LowerFilters problem based on my passed experience. That method solved my problem when my computer didn't even recognize the drives. If that is the problem, delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters value and restart your computer.

I think it is the hardware.  A quick solution would be to try another one and see if that does it.

Did you try deleting the drive from the device manager and rebooting?
This has been the solution for me on more than one occasion!
