Oh, I forgot, if it won't boot no matter what, take out the hard drive and put it in another computer. From there, you could possibly at least back up your data.

Browse All TopicsHi,
I have a an IBM R51 laptop with Windows XP Pro. For some time now I have not been able to run chkdsk even after a reboot, so I have been using Bart PE to allow me to run chkdsk.
So I booted up Bart PE again to run chkdsk. Problem is, I forgot that Bart PE had a chkdsk command built into the program. What I did in Bart PE was to get a command prompt and run chkdsk from the C prompt. Checkdisk ran, and asked if I wanted to disconnect something that was attached to the drive, and I said yes. It completed and fixed a number of errors it found. Then I tried booting Windows, but the boot would not complete. I am unable to boot into safe mode, last good boot, or regular boot. On top of that, my laptop did not come with a a Windows Recovery CD ...the only option is to reinstall XP which wipes out all of the data.
Is there anything I can do to get Windows to boot again?
Thanks!

If your Laptop did not come with a Windows Recovery CD how may I ask would you re-install windows?
What happens if you tap f10 at boot?
You say Laptop is this a DEL or HP or Compaq?

Running chkdsk from the C drive when you answered yes to dismounting the C drive is a bad thing.
When you used Bart PE you were right, you should have used the internal one.
As Merete said, I don't understand how you can re-install, but don't have a repair option.
As expert said worse comes to worse you can just remove the hard drive and plug it in to another machine then backup all the data.
first, check if the partition is set to active, use fdisk for it (from a bootable win98 floppy or cd) : www.bootdisk.com
then, you can always try to repair XP : - this does not delete any data !

The IBM Laptops come with an OEM version of XP installed, and there is no recovery disk provided. To restore XP, IBM has a pre-boot area where you can reinstall (not reparir) XP, and this wipes out the entire disk. IBM does not provide ANY way to do a repair....you have to back up the data, then reinstall!
XP will boot to a point, just won't finish the boot. Can't get to safe mode or regular start.
The ERB boot cd seems like the best option, and I read on the web that it allows access to XP system restore. The only download I could find for this was a link for a plugin for Bart PE...that too complex in my situation. Are there any links for a free download for a version that will start off a CD, and contain the ability to access Windows system restore?
I am trying the chkdsk c: /r /f command and will report the resuslts.
Bottom line, maybe its time to let the Geek Squad work on this?
Thanks for all of your posts...points to come

Have you tried making a boot disk on another computer and inserting it in?
You could also borrow a Recovery CD from someone else who has a similar or the same model of computer and use theirs. You might be able to recover Windows without losing your data.
If all else fails, bring it into a computer shop. They can possibly get it to boot, or, at the very least, backup the data before reinstalling XP.
