Had to change motherboard and the vga (Intel 865G chipset with integrated Extreme Graphics 2) does not support 1440*900.
How to change to an unsupported resolution on XP?
More info:
I tried in another computer with an Nvidia display adapter. It did not support 1440*900, but I modified the INF file of the detonator driver, and it worked. The Intel driver does not have the same INF file.
There must be 3rd party utility for this purpose... :)

I tried MultiRes and PowerStrip, but I can only set a resolution, which is already supported by the driver. I cannot set unsupported one. (Or I did not find, how to set it. To tell you the truth, I did not spend to much time on PowerStrip, since it cost as much as an Nvidia adapter. :))

Oh my! Sorry I did not realize that it's an nVidia card (thought it was intel graphics). I have the details for nVidia cards.
FWIW, here is what nVidia support said:
Please follow the steps below to customize the resolution:
1) Right click on the Desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
2) Once the control panel opens, click on Display
3) Under Appearance, select "Manage custom timings"
4) On the Manage custom timings page click on Create
5) On the Custom Timings page, under Custom display mode values please type in the required resolution.
6) Once the required resolution is added, click on test button and add the required resolution.
7) Then click on the NVIDIA Icon on the Taskbar of the Desktop and select the added resolution fro the screen resolution tab.

See if "PowerStrip" utility helps you set the custom resolution of 1440*900. This works if the graphics hardware supports that resolution or even beyond that.
