Registry Clean-up Programs

There must be a hundred (maybe more) software programs that claim to diagnose problems in the Windows Registry.  I just ran a scan using a product called RegCure and it found 1900 problems.  Are these programs reliable, and necessary?

Well, necessary may be a stretch - depends on if you want invalid items in the registry or not.
It doesn't prevent your system from running - but it may delay program startup, processing time, etc - as it has to validate these invalid entries each time those sections/keys are queried.

I've not heard of RegCure, but like you said, there must be hundreds of these tools out there...Personally, I've only used RegClean...

Well, I happen to be a registry cleaner expert ;)
My friend had RegCure but it didn't work very well. I've tried pretty much all of the registry cleaners and tested them for accuracy. I recommend TuneUp Utilities(http://tuneup.swmirror.com/TU2007TrialEN.exe) I would say that the most popular registry cleaners are System Mechanic, TuneUp Utilities, and Registry Mechanic. From my tests, 100% of the errors that System Mechanic finds are accurate but it only finds a few. Registry Mechanic finds a ton but I don't recommend using its deep scan. TuneUp Utilities finds a ton of errors and they're all accurate.
