Question

Put a Folder in the Root of the Start Menu

Asked by: Thrasymachus

This should be easy...

First off the facts:
I have Windows XP professional SP2 running on a lenovo T60p Laptop. it is currently on a Novell Domain and I have a roaming profile that syncs up so I have access to my docs and stuff when I am out of the office.  I am using the Classic Start Menu.
Also I have administrative permissions on the XP box, but not on the domain.

Now the problem:
What I want to do is put a folder with shortcuts in it at the root of the start menu (at the top, above Programs). I have shortcuts there already and they work fine. I can drag and drop a folder on the root and it ends up in my profile\Start menu folder, but it doesnt show up when I  click on the start menu.

I have tried putting the folder in the All Users profile as well, but still no luck.

Does anyone know if there is a group policy setting that can suppress folders on the root of the start menu?
I have done this in the past, and I would be quite grateful to any XP guru who could help me out.

If you right-click the folder and drag it onto the Start button itself, does that accomplish what you're looking for?? It should drop the folder near the top beneath IE, Outlook, etc...

If I drop it on the start button, nothing happens, if I drop it to the spot I want it on the Start Menu, it asks me if I want to replace the folder I already have there (but cannot see - in the All users profile) I select 'yes' it goes through ...relpacing dialog. but I still cannot see the folder.

tdkim1 -
yep That's pretty much what I did. It The folder is there, but is not listed in the start menu. if you look at the second picture in your link. the 'Net2Phone' Link would show, but the 'Games' Folder does not.

that's odd b/c when i do it, the folder displays and i placed a test shortcut in there.

i placed it in the all users startmenu (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu) which you said you did already...

can you try it under a different profile?  like the local admin account to see if there's a difference?

by: ThrasymachusPosted on 2007-02-09 at 08:05:42ID: 18502242

I created a new local user and logged on as that user and I was able to see the folder in the start menu then. The odd thing was I could see the folder from the <All Users> profile, but could not see any of the sub folders, I could still create folders and shortcuts fine. That would be good enough for me, nothing I want needs to be in the <all users> profile. It looks like there is something in my profile, or something in the group policy that is causing this?

any other thoughts?

you can test the theory of it just being your profile; i'm unaware of a group policy that would prohibit this but that doesn't mean it's not there.

log in as the local admin of the account
rename your profile to something else (if you get an access denied msg, restart)
log off the local admin account and log in as your domain account

If this doesn't work and you want to get your old profile in place, follow the same steps and just rename it back to your username.  If it does work, rebuild your profile; it will be less of a headache than trying to deal with all the weird customizations and registry settings for your profile.

i'm not sure what you mean by "The odd thing was I could see the folder from the <All Users> profile, but could not see any of the sub folders"

did you create new folders/shortcuts in that folder and it wouldn't show the structure from the start menu?

OK -
I found out there is a policy under "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar" called "Remove user's folders from the Start Menu" that was enabled at the Domain level.

So what I did was change the setting here: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoStartMenuSubFolders

Then I removed all write permissions except myself to that key. I did a "gpupdate /Force" Then I logged off and now my folders show up!
I think my problem is solved. If there are any other Group policy guru's around and know of a better solution let me know, I'll give you the points. Unfortunately my company will not even think about changing the Policy Setting, so I am forced to circumvent it.
