Question

Toshiba laptop, Windows XP Home won't load and recovery disk doesn't work

Asked by: bremsech

Toshiba A65 S1062 Laptop purchased in 2004
Will not load Windows XP home version, I have gotten the following messages:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:  System32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-OM.  Select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.

Or

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.  Please report this problem as:  load needed DLLs for kernel

When I couldn’t find the original recovery disk or windows disk (it was originally my daughters college computer and of course she misplaced them) I ordered a new one from Toshiba and $40 later it won’t work either.  When trying to boot from the recovery disk I have gotten

“Starting Toshiba Preinstall Applications and Drivers Recovery System” and then it just hangs there forever.

or

File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.  The error code is 14
Setup cannot continue.  Press any key to exit.

or

An unexpected error (268565136) occurred at line 1768 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.  Press any key to continue

Then it usually bypasses trying to restore and returns to the load needed DLLs for kernel error.

I called Toshiba and the response was that there was probably something wrong with the hard drive and I need to take it into a Toshiba repair shop.

Any advice is appreciated:)

Thanks,

Charlotte

I think thats the best advice. Probably something is wrong with the hardware. It can be the harddisk and/or the cdrom/dvd drive.
If you have access to an external cdrom drive (USB) you can give that one a try (provided that the notebook can boot from an external cdrom drive).

Hope it helps,

Michael

I got an external cdrom writer, but I don't know how to get it to boot from the external drive.  The directions say to hold down the C key to get it to boot from the internal cd rom, but it doesn't work for the external drive.  I tried F2 and changing the boot priority, but I don't know which one is the external or USB.  The choices are CD-ROM, LAN, HDD or FDD.  Can anyone help be boot from the external drive?
Thanks,

Charlotte

It doesn't look like it supports External Boot Devices. If it has something like:

USB-CDROM
USB-Thumbdrive
USB - whatever

you would be 'good to go'.

Guess what!  I fixed it:)  I was taking pics of it and going to put it on Ebay today, I was a little nervous about replacing the HD and then finding out that wouldn't work either.  I tried booting with the restore disk one more time and it switched to another unexpected error in (the number was long, sorry I don't remember exactly what it was) occurred in line 1768 in d:/xpsp1/base/boot/setup/arcdisp.C, so I searched for this error in Google and someone mentioned a memory issue.  I popped out the extra memory card and it booted up, although slowly.  I then waited for it to cool down again, this laptop runs very hot and inserted the memory again and it seems to be working fine now!  Thanks for the support.  It is still appreciated:)
