Question

Problem opening images on a PC with XP SP2 Pro and Office 2000 SBE Suite

Asked by: anotherhick

I have a desktop running Microsoft Office 2000 SBE with all updates applied that is hanging up any time the user tries to open an image that has been attached to an email.  Here is the list of Events that are being logged in the Event Viewer.  I have completely un-installed and re-installed the entire Office suite 3 times but the issues remains.  I have the issue with and without the updates applied to Office.  I even have the issue if the user saves the attachments and tries to open them manually.  I've tried numerous imaging applications on this PC (Paint, Photo Editor, Fax Viewer, Picasa, Jasc PhotoShop) and all do the same thing.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Here are the Events from the Event Viewer:

Greetings, anotherhick !

Outlook blocks many attachment extensions as a security precaution.  You can add the extension to Level1Remove key in registry
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm
or
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=535416

Best wishes!

by: anotherhickPosted on 2007-03-16 at 09:02:49ID: 18735834

The attachments actually come through, but when the user tries to open them it hangs any open Office application.

by: CDCCtechPosted on 2007-03-16 at 11:26:54ID: 18736913

I would suggest trying to remove the alternative user input service as per this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599 This service sometimes hangs outlook attachments and office.

by: anotherhickPosted on 2007-03-16 at 12:23:53ID: 18737338

CDCCtech,

Is this true for Office 2000 as well as Office XP?

by: CDCCtechPosted on 2007-03-16 at 12:51:32ID: 18737540

Yes. The kb article I referenced was just to give you an idea of the removal instructions. There is a kb somewhere that alludes to this in outlook 2000.

Uninstall outlook and reinstall. If this does not work reinstall the entire Workstation with the OS.

Your cache make be full.  Attachment are opened into a temporary folder
C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKxxx

where xxx are random numbers.  Delete all the files from temp folder.  OLKxxx is sometimes difficult to access.  Unhide hidden files. If no joy, access the folder via DOS prompt.
