Have you ran a chkdsk to make sure it's not a corrupted filesystem causing these problems?

Browse All TopicsRunning a defrag via computer management on a laptop with WinXP SP2 (single drive, so defragging the OS drive), the defrag seems to terminate early with the message:
Defragmentation is complete for: (C:)
Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.
There are a number of files listed, some still in several hundred fragments (and they are data files, avi files, etc - nothing that should be open or in use by anything else). The first listing in the report however, is
Fragments File Size File Name
12 893 bytes \
Saving the report output to a text file confirms that there are no trailing spaces or anything after the listed file name, it is simply coming up as "\". I do not know if this is an issue or not, I just don't recall seeing this on other machines that I have defragged in the past.
This process has been repeated multiple times, including immediately after a fresh boot.
So the original question is, what should I do to complete defragmentation of the remainder of the drive? The question that comes from looking into this however, is what is with the "\" file name being reported, and should I be worried about it?
Thus far my searching attempts have failed to come up with anything. I'm dealing with a terrible cold at the moment, so I'm perfectly open to the possibility that I'm being dense and missing something obvious here. A little shove in a useful direction please?

You may want to try Diskeeper Lite.

I had already run through chkdsk without incident.
Running the defrag in safe mode, hangs at 1% (looking it task manager shows no processor utilization, and no I/O reads or writes over 10+ minutes) consistantly. I had already gone through and terminated all of the processes that I could while running this, but that has not seemed to make any difference thus far.
I'm running SFC now, and will take a look at Disckeeper lite as a possible alternative -- however, even if that is able to defrag some of the other files, I fear that might still leave me with the question of "what is causing the mmc defrag to fail? Is it this reported "\" file, and if so, what exactly is that?"
d_may,
Should SFC have returned any information on completion, or is no news good news? (It simply closed itself without any reporting displayed, etc) Or is there somewhere I need to look for a report?
The link you provided for diskeeperlite gave me a 404, but I found a download for it from www.majorgeeks.com, and am downloading now to give it a try...
Great, the link was old:
I have used Diskeeper for a long time with great results.
I am wondering if you may need to do a repair of Windows XP
Maybe you have a corrupted regestry. If that is the case, I use Regestry First Aid to rid my system of invalid paths, shortcuts and old programs.
SFC closes automaticly, no news is good news. If it needed a file it would have asked you for your Windows xp disc. (Have it Handy). No report provided.
Let me know when you give diskeeper lite a try.

Diskeeper seems to be able to plow through and get things defragmented. After a couple of runs, it has things down to an acceptable point of fragmentation.
I admit, I'm still somewhat miffed at not knowing exactly what the problem was, as I still have that nagging feeling that there is something going on behind the scenes that diskeeper is just either immune to, or somehowe sidesteps the land-mine etc. Guess I'll have to live with not knowing at this point.
Interestingly enough, Diskeeper was able to shed a bit more light on the "\" entry -- it wasn't referring to some file that wasn't being identified correctly, it was in fact referring to the root directory itself. The default defragment util's report just didn't make this explicitly clear (as Diskeeper does).
Thanks for the help, d_may.

When I do a defrag, I prefer to do it in safe mode. That way there aren't as many processes running in the background. Also, take a look at the task manager and terminate any processes that aren't needed. You could also delete files that aren't needed, especially temp files, cookies, internet files and so forth. This should make the process go a bit more smoothly.
