Unable to start Windows XP Firewall

Hi,

I am unable to start the Windows firewall on a client's pc.  The pc is running Windows XP Professional  SP2. When trying to start Windows Firewall from Control Panel I receive the following error message:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? Yes No
Clicked Yes
Received message: Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. OK  Error 5: Access is denied. OK

I have tried the following and the firewall is enabled for about 1 minute and then the error message reappears that the associated service is not running.
1. Typing "netsh firewall reset" in command prompt and restarting pc
Received message: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied. OK
2. Tried winsock fix.

I've already tried the winsock fix and the netsh firewall reset command.

Hi,
Just thought I would try something that shouldn't have worked, but again, I was wrong.  A Windows repair did the trick.  Firewall is up and running again, just like new.  Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

Hey.

One thing to make sure of is that you have administrative rights. If you are a Limited user you may not be able to change services settings.
