Question

abnormal network activities in windows xp

Asked by: InNoCenT_Ch1ld

My OS = Windows XP Pro, SP2.
I have just formatted and reinstall the OS last week, before that, when i browse net, download, etc is fast (for me), but after format and reinstall, it became very slow, and my browser always return 'cannot find server,' etc..
I take a look in my network activity and i noticed that, even when i'm not surfing/ downloading, the sent packet is very high.. its like my pc keep sending out something. I have scan my pc with Kaspersky Anti-virus with the latest virus database, and it detects nothing.
I also took a look in my task manager, and i noticed that i actually have more than 5 svchost.exe running and one of them taking out a lot of resources, and when i terminated that particular svchost.exe, the sent packet activity stopped.
i'm not sure what had happened to my pc, i scan with antivirus, ad-aware, etc but found nothing wrong, i even disabled the Automatic Updates..

Most likely Automatic windows updates. Stop the service or change to manual and see.

centerv is right. This seems like the MS Update malfunction causing svchost.exe to use 100% cpu time. I posted the following suggested solution in another thread recently:

The solution is in two parts:

First, download and install the patch from this link:
  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

If that doesn't fix the problem (of svchost using 100% cpu) then do the following:
Go to the microsoft update site.  -> http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
On the left side select "Change Settings"
Scroll to the bottom and you see

-------------------
To stop using Microsoft Update
If you no longer want to install updates using this website, you can disable the supporting software on your computer.

You can still get updates from the Windows Update website by visiting the site or by turning on automatic updating on your computer. However, you will not be able to get updates for products other than Windows.

Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only "
-------------------

Check the Box and select "Apply Changes Now"

* NOTE YOU HAVE TO ALLOW THE ACTIVEX CONTROL TO SEE THIS OPTION **
(the above I am copying and pasting from a post by bigjimbo813 in another thread)

Between the two the svchost problem should disappear. I will post comments about disk space next.

Second, MS has released an interim update that promises to fix the problem. If you feel like it, you can install it from:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx

(then you don't need the two-step fix I posted above).

This fix will also be part of the normal update process later this month, I heard.

If you still feel there is another problem, such as a virus or other malware, then please do the following:

Download and run HijackThis from http://www.hijackthis.de/
(use the "direct download" link in the upper-right corner)
Copy-and-paste the resulting log back to that same web site (not here)
Click on "Analyze", and let us know the link to the saved HJT log. It should be just above the "Analyze" button on the page that comes up after you click Analyze.

Also, here is a quick test to see which program might be using the network:

Type "netstat -ab" at a command prompt. You might want to use "netstat -ab > list.txt" to save it to a text file. Then examine that list with Notepad and see which program is using that port(s). Most likely it will be svchost.exe which is hosting the MS Update service. But if it is something else let us know.
