The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Compaq DVDRW Driver Mystery...

Recently I decided to format/reinstall my Compaq Presario V2583US laptop.  Before the format I backed up all my data using the built in DVDRW drive (model #GSA-4084N) and everything was working fine.  After the reinstallation I noticed that my optical drive was not recognized at all.  So I followed a microsoft fix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553) and made a registry change on a couple of records. Poof, the drive was back.  All looked fine until I tried to burn a DVD and that's when I realized that the system had identified it as a DVDRAM CDRW drive.

So long story short, a whole day wasted trying to get HP's online tech support to help me figure it out, they were useless.  I've tried deleting the device from device manager and reinstalling.  It just loads the same driver over and over again.  I tried physically removing the drive, reboot, reinstall, reboot, nothing...  The main problem here is that I can't find a driver anywhere on HP's site (their support admitted they didn't offer anything too) and what ever driver XP is giving it is for a CDRW and has the system confused.

Now if noone here has to knows where I could find a good driver, I wanted to pose a suggestion and see what you guys think.  My dad has a laptop, almost exactly like mine.  He has same OS (XP Pro SP2) and same model of DVDRW drive.  I was thinking that maybe if I knew where to go in the OS, I could just copy this driver files and put them on my PC.  Then try a driver update in the device manager.  What do you think?  Any suggestions would be great!
