Question

Windows Updates problem

Asked by: hodgem

I just had a bad hard drive, need to replace it and reinstall XP SP2. After doing so, loading all of the drivers etc, everything was fine, no problems. As you know, once its going for a bit, Windoew updates are then dowloaded and installed. When I got to the 75 or so updates, I installed them, rebooted and got a blue screen. Rebooted same thing. The next time I rebooted I did the F8 thing ,and did the "Last Known Good..."
That seemed to fix. So I decided to try the updates again, after doing them again, same blue screen. Did another LKG, back to normal again. So my questions are: How do I tell which updates are causing this, and how do I fix or prevent it from happening? Help!

1) see if you can boot up in safe mode and then look at all the logs.

2) Other option is to do ten at a time, and slowly find out which one is messing with your machine.

I hope this helps !

I would do a few things.

1. Start without doing any driver updates, just windows updates
2. I would check to make sure you aren't trying to update multiple versions of the same thing, for instance .net framework 1.1, 2. and 3.
3. Grab them in smaller groups until you find which one it is.

I would expect it to be a driver update though.

Can you upload the .dmp files from c:\windows\minidump to http://www.ee-stuff.com? We might be able to isolate the faulting module....

I dont believe it is a hidden folder.....

But you can always verify if it is even set to minidump...

Contro Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery, and make sure it is checked to do a small minidump, and note the directory...

If you cant boot it, then you can always use a BartPE CD to boot to an alternate OS, and retrieve the files.....

"Various people are reporting that the MS07-040 patch for .NET released on Tuesday can cause a variety of seemingly unrelated problems. According to the SANS Internet Storm Center 'the reports we got so far seem not to lead to any specific thing that happens in many cases, just various things going haywire.' Some commentators on The Register's report of this story indicate that the patch failed to install at all, while others report things like the mouse suddenly failing to work or long periods of hard drive thrashing. In some cases a hard reboot seems to fix the problem, but other reports suggest that a reinstallation of the .NET framework itself is required. The problems may be related to the MSCORSVW.EXE process which recompiles all the .NET assemblies when the patch is downloaded. While the recompilations are supposed to run as a background task, in some instances the recompilation will drive the processor to 100% usage."

hey AaronIT, how do I tell it to just do Windows updates, and NOT driver updates?

by: AaronITPosted on 2007-07-13 at 15:43:20ID: 19484941

Go to the windows update website, once you are there, there is an options section, you can select it there, or in your case unselect it there.

Those auto updates seem to cause a plethora of problems. Especially on E-machines (go figure). Once you identify the culprit (I suggest just downloading them in small groups until you narrow it down to a group of a few updates), you might try downloading the update as a ".exe" file from Microsoft rather than using Microsoft Update. Just go to microsoft.com and type in the number of the update (i.e. KB912345). I have found that sometimes doing the updates this way will allow you to install them successfully. If not it will allow you to pinpoint which update is causing you the trouble. Incidentally, I have just dealt with a problem where updates KB929969 and KB933566 were disabling IE7's ability to view webpages. I also previously dealt with an auto update corrupting an important .dll on another machine so Windows would not even boot (sorry, I don't have the number of that update). Both were E-machines. Microsoft needs to stick with software and quit trying to make computers if you ask me. Best of luck.
