Explorer.exe hangs after logon
I have a freshly imaged XP Pro sp2 (volume license) Lenovo Thinkpad T60 (model 2007-geu).
Explorer occasionally hangs after logon. I am left with the background image at time of lockup. Sometimes there are icons, some times there are not. The mouse moves, but does not click. The keyboard commands like Ctrl + Shift + Esc or Ctrl + Esc do not work, but Ctrl +Alt + Delete does.
I have found I can go to Task Manager by using CAD and kill explorer.exe and then File, New Task, Explorer to recover.
I have several of these laptops. I make one image and then Ghost it onto the others. I noticed the problem on the parent and first clone laptop. I have started over from scratch on a third laptop and am getting the same problem. I have all the current drivers and Windows Updates.
Any ideas?

Could be malware - check the image with Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) and Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) and SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html) (make sure you update these last two before running a scan)
This would be my guess too, but if you say that these are freshly imaged, are these virgin installs?
Check that you don't hav UPnP enabled in your network settings which can cause extended boot although unlikely that long. Are your laptops trying to restore net mappings?
worth going through these as well as the malware check

UPnP was enabled through SSDP in Services. I disabled it. I also ran both Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. They only found some tracking cookies. The image on the laptop is a fresh install from CD to a formated HD. I downloaded the drivers from Lenovo.com for all the devices listed in Device Manager. I have installed three different 3rd party software that we use on all our PCs: PComm, Content Manager, and Acrosoft. Nothing has changed recently in these software installs, so I don't think they are the problem.

I have also noticed if I hard reboot by holding in power button, it usually lock the screen at the CAD prompt for logon. I don't normally hard reboot. It was before I found the explore.exe kill trick. I just tried it and it still lockes up the PC.
if these is an image and there is a possibility on hardware error that might be registered to the original laptop, a genuine windows OEM OS might not accept the new hardware because of its difference of product id.

I installed StartupCPL and found several "extra" items listed. Most of them were installed automatically by Lenovo's System Updater. I disabled all the unnessicary items like BlueTooth and System Updater stuff. It has not locked up since. I will keep testing and possibly give to users to see if they have any problems.
Thanks for the suggestions.
