I have a Microsft Intellimouse (comfort mouse) 3000, usb connection. The mouse seems to die. Initially I had it connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the computer via an extention cable, but I had to move it up a bit on the desk and no longer needed the extention cable.
Anyway, the mouse died, the red "laser" light ceased. So I unplugged it and checked the connection and it came back online. Ok.. I assumed that maybe the plug was bad. I connected it to a different USB port and it worked, but the software wanted to go through the re-install .
I did it, and it worked for a few hours then quit. I assumed that the mouse was dying and bought an exact replacement, some problems. It runs for a while then it is dead, requiring the mouse to be unplugged and replugged in.
Now this happens all the time, can go a day or longer. No new software, nothing new,. Anyway I went back to CompUsa and bought a HP wireless and I couldn't get it to work and took it back. The system wouldn't recognize it. So back with the MS mouse.
My configuration is basically an gateway 500s, with SP2, 2 gigs Ram, 3 external drives that are working fine, my printer is on the parallel port and nothing fancy plugged in.
Suggestions?

Or, if you want to run other system tests (motherboard, ram, cpu, hard drive) the Ultimate Boot Cd (www.ultimatebootcd.com) has some very good tools (no usb tester yet, though).
Probably a new computer would be great, but I have so much on this one and right now.. I really don't see anything out there that I want ... ok.. the water cooled Dell but that is way too expensive ..
I have tried a hub and different ports.. I have six ports on the computer direct and two hubs. I 'll give the software thing a try, but also maybe hook the mouse back into the extention cord and see with that makes a difference.. could be a manufacturing flaw with the angle the usb cord makes when it hangs out the back of the port. I'd like to try a wireless mouse, but I have a Davis weather station as well as a 2.4 ghz wirelless router on my wife's machine ( we have two cable modems) .
Any other suggestions..
I am having no other issues with the USB ports. all other items, hubs etc. work fine.
If I plug the USB Microsoft Comfort mouse 3000 into a hub, the mouse is dead, the CPU doesn't seem to recognize the mouse and sends no power. The computer.. If I plug into the 2.0 jacks like I have always done, it will work however two things might occur. I get the new hardware announcement showing or not. The second is it may work for a while, then the mouse pointer freezes and then it goes dead.
I then can unplug the mouse a bit , enough to break connection, plug it back in and I am good to go for a while.
This is nuts as it is unpredictable as to when an event will occur, so to trap it, just isn't working.
I uninstalled the driver.. it is using the 11/7/2006 Driver 6.10.155.0 right now. I did a windows update, roll back (I don't like doing roll backs as it always screws up my weather data tracking program and I have to manually edit text data which sucks).
I di d try the test my ports and nothing showed up as being out of the ordinary. I am guessing it may be software? My firewall /antivirus is ZoneAlarm Security Suite, it has worked before, permissions are there , unless I got a silent update somewhere that is screwing things up suddenly, I have not a handle on this one. It is frustrating .
yep, di d it and had a world of trouble with getting anything to work, Lucky I remember the days before mice and could get back to the system restore. But I did give it the old college try.
I don't use memory sticks, but with the other USB devices no problems. I also went to the holy knowledge base and completely removed everything regarding intellimouse. That didn't help either.
I do here that sound when an usb or something disconnects before the mouse shuts down.
I don't see what could be conflicting on Com 1 or where the mouse plugs in. I also noticed that with I try the ps/2 connection it doesn't work either. I also uninstalled the mouse and reinstalled it.
this thing is baffling, just started up with no reason ...
Oh when I change USB ports, I am always asked to install the change as new hardware. Obviously the XP is pissed. I have a lot on the machine as far as specific software and data, my wife said to go buy a new machine, however, I can't see doing it for a mouse.
Did try the HP wireless that comes with the charger, it wouldn't work or recognize it either out of the box so I took that back.. Not sure if it was the unit or the computer. I would try a wireless but if the problem is with intellimouse software conflicts, I really don't want to go that route.

did you try witthout symantec, and Zone alarm ?
I tried it without the Zone alarm.. gad, I still have some remnant of symantec,? Thought I removed every trace, well back to power tools for that sucker.
The ofoto is for the camera to send pictures to Kodak. I think that setting is to upload on connection .. I can fix that .

I have a bluetooth on my cell phone as well as in the car. I suppose I would have to add something in addition to the actual device to match up with the computer.
This is really silly, the mouse works fine for so long, then works some , craps out , then works for a while.. has to be some way of trapping or logging all of the mouse activites or the usb that is going on.
However, it is so infrequent... I wonder if I would try one of those old Dr. Watson programs and have it build a log in the background...
not yet, probably will go for a logitech as that is what came with it, one of those nice ball mice. I'll go and give it a try now...
I did a defrag, registry clean and compact and a scan disk and it worked fine for a while. not sure. I wish it I could find out what is conflicting with it, but nothing shows up on the device manager or on anything else. I went over to PC pitstop and ran their tests and nada..
RFI is my arch enemy.. I have a Davis VP2 weather station and radio interference is a big deal . However, I think I have my frequencies balanced. I know when I had my LG phone, if I had it on the desk, it would lose charge trying to link to its network, the Motorola and Verizon doesn't seem to have that issue.
I haven't gone the wireless route yet. Our school district had an agreement with Dell and we got a 25% off the 25% discount they had. Now they have gone with HP this year and I don't know if they have a similar deal. If so I might go and beg the wife that I need a new machine , transfer all to a new unit and be done with the mouse problem. of course I hve to have a serial board or at least bays that I can install a serial board for the weather station. The USB datalogger has a lot of problems with its drivers and I 'd rather not go that route. I know this sort of off topic, but when I go to either Best Buy or Compusa and ask about how many PCI ports does the computer have, I get this odd look in the sales kids eyes and I have to explain to him what I am talking about. I think some kids are becoming less literate about how the machine actually works.
However, the unit I have isn't all that bad for a old machine (5 years old). I don't play games on it as I suck at them, use them for data crunching and processing and of course keeping you busy trying to figure out what the mouse is conflicting with..
I'll do the cell phone thing and get out and get a new wired mouse. Wireless would be nice, but with the USB port being under question, I think a different brand of wired mouse ..

installed a Logitech LX3 optical mouse a few minutes ago. I installed it as a PS/2 option and will let it go for a while. I don't think anyone has a reasonable solution. I am giving you the points and close this situation. I appreciate the assistance.
I have seen on a google search that others have the problem as well and no clear fix.

Sounds like maybe the USB ports are going bad? You may want to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard.
maybe try a USB hub?
