The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Windows XP Pro Crashes w/BSOD - Not a simple diagnosis to solve.

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude D620 running XP Pro SP2 that crashes with the BSOD regularly. I get a system dump message. The STOP messages vary but include 0X00000050; 0x00000008E and win32k.sys. I can send the dump files if someone is willing to look at them. I have looked at them but am not savvy enough to pick out the problems. I have read many of the answers on EE regarding similar situations. I have also gone to numerous other sites and spoken with Dell at least three times.

Here are the actions I have already taken
      Dell replaced 100% of the RAM. No improvement.
      Dell replaced the motherboard. No improvement.
      I ran Windiag memory tests from a bootable CD. No errors.
      I uninstalled my fax drivers, address book, HP toolkit. No improvement.
      Updated and Flashed the BIOS. No improvement
      Uninstalled Super Utilities (in case it was an issue). No improvement
      Uninstalled ScreenPrint32. No improvement
      

Unusual aspects of my install
      I run dual monitors using the NVIDIA driver Dell provides with the Latitude.
      I use a Belkin 4-port USB KVM and also have a Mac and another PC on the switch.
      I have 8-12 programs open at one time including Excel, Outlook, Word, Act, an SQL database manufacturing system, IM, InfoSelect, Explorer, Citrix, Remote desktop, iTunes and more. I often leave my PC running for days. However, crashes seem unconnected; e.g., this morning after a fresh boot and the sytem being off for 24 hours, it crashed with the 50 stop error.

Crashing is intermittent. Sometimes twice a day; sometimes only 1 time a week. I have about 10 dump files available to be read. Dell recommends a reload of the Windows OS but I am loathe to do that. I would appreciate any insight.
