Question

Administration accounts

Asked by: d_may

I am having problems with Microsoft Windows updates failing to install.  I am thinking it has to do with my Adminatration accounts.  (I have three).  I need instructions on how to delete two of them.  The reason I believe this is because of Windows Defender.  It is closed when I open it with the icon on my desktop.
It will not run at 2:00AM as scheduled.  Do I need to keep more than one Admin account?  I am the only user on this Dell 4600, with 1.5 memory.  Also I do not have the sign on page with the blue background and the icons.  I use the other kind.  I also need instructions to get the Windows sign on page again. (default).
I think this is like I said one issue with many parts that is preventing updates and Defender from opening and running correctly.  Thank-You for any help Experts can give me concerning this problem that needs correcting.

You can delete user accounts by right clicking My Computer, select Manage. Go to Local Users and Groups, and then select Users. You can delete from there.

Having multiple accounts in not a bad idea. If you want the Welcome screen back, so long as your comuter is not in a domain this can be done be selecting START->Settings->Control Panel->User Accounts and select Change the way users log on, and select Welcome Screen.

I think I can answer 2 of your embedded questions, unfortunately I am unsure about Windows Defender.

To change to the regular windows xp logon screen (the one with the blue background and icons), go to
1) START -> CONTROL PANEL -> USER ACCOUNTS.
2) click CHANGE THE WAY USERS LOG ON AND OFF
3) make sure the checkbox is enabled for USE THE WELCOME SCREEN

to delete your other local user administartor accounts. navigate to
1) START -> CONTROL PANEL -> USER ACCOUNTS
2) select the account you wish to delete
3) select DELETE THE ACCOUNT and follow the instructions
note: you can only delete administrator accounts from an administrator account

to troubleshoot your windows update problem will be much trickier, can you post the windows update error?  (you'll need to be using an administrator account to run and install windows updates) some things to start trying out:
1) confirm that your computer time and date are correct
2) open IE, go to TOOLS -> INTERNET OPTIONS -> SECURITY and select the button RESET ALL ZONES TO THE DEFAULT LEVEL
3) run a repair install with the windows os cd.

One other thing about deleting accounts. Check to see that they don't have anything in them that you want. After you've deleted the account, go into My Computer | Properties | Advanced | User Profiles | Settings and verify that the profile for the account is gone. If it's still there, delete it.

I still do not have the welcome screen.  I will look at my note from the past and see who I changed this.
I have not deleted my admin account as of yet, and I may not.  It is good tyo have more than one admin account.  I just need to be able to select which on I log on to as windows starts up.
