The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. services.exe uses 100% CPU when new Hardware detected

I have been having a major problem installing new Hardware onto my Sony VAIO VGN-S2XP Laptop for about 4 or 5 months now and I've just about run out of ideas.

Basically, when I plug in any new USB device (or connect a new Bluetooth device) services.exe begins to take 99-100% of my CPU. This doesn't happen if I connect something  I've previously connected and installed, only with new devices. For example, so far I have been unable to connect a Nokia N95 (via USB or Bluetooth), an iPod Nano (via USB) and an External 500Gb Hard-Drive (Also via USB). When I connect the devices I get the usual Pop-up saying 'New Hardware detected' or 'Bluetooth Peripheral device' but that's when services.exe begins to gobble up all of my CPU forcing me to reboot. I used Process Explorer (for the first time) and as far as I can see as soon as you plug in the device a new sub-process starts called rundll32.exe before services.exe begins to take 100% of the CPU.

Although, this hasn't helped me solve my problem I noticed that someone else had a similar problem here:

I'm pretty good at maintaining Windows and raraly have issues that stump me like this one has. I also regularly run software like Ad-aware & SpyBot S&D to keep it free of junk and running smoothly. I've looked high and low for a solution to this and desperately want to avoid formatting if possible. I hope someone can finally help me figure out what the problem is and help me fix it, it's so frustrating when you have new Hardware that you can't even use!
