With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not?   • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. I need to make an informed decision whether or not to have a new PC XP delivered with main drive partitioned.

Greetings,

I may be getting a new Dell PC running XP Pro, and one of the options I must decide in advance is whether to have the main (C:) drive delivered partitioned. It will likely be a 160 Gb drive. My current PC is so slow it cannot even process broadband, and hangs when running big Apps.

I have heard conflicting views about partitioning main drive. One says it increases processing burden and slows system processing down. Other says a smaller main C: drive speeds things up, since less is stored there.

My existing computer has an 80 Gb main drive, of which I partitioned off 15 Gb. The 65 Gb's remaining are more than enough for OS, all apps, and principal storage. I have a second 100 Gb drive for backup and additional storage. As it turns out, I don't really use the 15 Gb partition on the C: drive, as I have yet to have any reason to do so.

What are the pros and cons of partitioning main drive? Please use plain language as I am not a techie. The bottom line for me in this question is processing speed.
