Question

Converted from Vista to XP - now cannot connect to the Internet.

Asked by: lonneclark

I bought a new computer and it came installed with Vista but also shipped with XP disks.  After a couple of weeks running Vista, just too many problems with compatability and so I decided to install XP.

I did that, and now there is only 1 network connect I394, and it says it is connected, but I can't get on the internet.

Device manager shows ? and ! for the Ethernet adapter [as well as others including the finger print sensor, and an HP (USB connected) printer.

I need to get back online and fast !  what can I do.

You LAN connection requires installation.
Can you check the motherboard model (if this is onboard LAN we are talking about) - or the PCI card model - and post it (them) here?
Someone might be able to find a suitable driver for your LAN connection - once we know the chipset.

you need to install the correct ethernet driver

the easiest way is to use a seperate computer to get on the net and download the xp drivers for the particular computer.

log onto the manufacturer website - plug in the serial number under the support section and download all drivers related to xp..

most likely the motherboard or the specific network drivers will get you working.

or tell us what type and serial number you have and one of us will find the correct drivers for you.

Your going to need to install drivers for all these devices. Vista may have shipped with the drivers built in, XP may need an additional driver CD which may have shipped with your PC. IF not you'll need to either send for the driver CD or download these drivers from over the internet.

Please note - as this hardware was built for Vista - then it might be the case that no suitable xp chipset or network driver exists.
This is a common issue with laptops in particular at the moment.

You may need to swap the eternet card for a new one(or older one) that is xp compatible.
I have heard of some computers shipping with not only no drives for xp downgrade but also
not compatible. Usually windows xp will find the older set of ethernet cards or install a compatible driver.

All of the HP computers come with two XP restore discs...one is the OS installation (which you ran).  The other is one that you run FROM Windows XP & that installs of the third-party apps & drivers.  (which would fix this problem).  The nice thing is that you can easily select what apps you want installed & which you do not.

I would look through your stuff & try to find that driver.
