The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Error while Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3

Tags: Microsoft, Windows XP, Service Pack 3, Windows XP Sp3 Install
Hi Experts!

With Windows XP SP3 Beta available for download, we decided to test it out so we downloaded the windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu SP3 setup and ran it on 10 exactly similar test pcs with XP SP2 clean install. The installation of SP3 went fine on all but 2 PCs on which we face odd issues.

(Logged in as local admins. Installation files copied to local pcs)

On one PC, SP3 Installs ok  but since then the network connection service fails to start saying it has nothing to do.
On the second PC, Installation fails at a point after successfully creating a restore point with an error"FAILED TO UPDATE SECURITY CATALOG" CLICK OK TO UNDO THE INSTALLATION.WINDOWS XP WAS PARTIALLY UPDATED AND MAY OR MAYNOT WORK PROPERLY message.

I have started a windows update with the registry hack below to  download SP3 via WIndows Update. Think that will work out OK.

I just wanted to know the possible reasons for SP3 to cause services not to start and for the failed to update SECURITY CATALOG message. Also anyone else testing XP SP3 beta at the moment and had any issues? Any impressive features in SP3?

Thanks in advance for your help!

As it is still Beta, I think you should post those problems to M$. That's what Beta products are for, to find out if there are problems and then with feedback to the manufacturer's try to eliminate those problems.

Thanks for the suggestion Rindi.
Like I already mentioned, all 10 PCs are having exactly the same h/w and s/w. To be precise, the HDDs were ghosted from a single Install, and we have had few users working on the ten PCs. I suspect that its some event (like an install of a update or app) that occured on the two PC - preventing them to upgrade to SP3.
I was just wondering if there are any experts who have had tried SP3 with or without issues.

Note : I do not expect a fix , solution or workaround for this issue as I am fully aware that it is XP SP3 BETA but I just want to know why it failed to update stating errors (posted in my question)

I will try running processmon and filemon to find out the file failing to get updated this evening after work.

Just looking for the right direction.

Cheers
SC

An Update.
Like I already mentioned, Windows Update for SP3 sorted the problem.

The Cause of the "Failed to Update Security Catalog" Error while applying Win XP SP3 was due to inconsistencies in Security Catalog.
To Rebuild the Security Catalog
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log
This will force a rebuild and any inconsistency will be corrected.

All problems self sorted.
Cheers
SC
