Permanently remove deleted files

Asked by msis2002 in Windows XP Operating System, Operating Systems Network Security

Good evening,

I have purchased a used laptop for my granddaughter.  I am told that the previous owner used the system to surf for pornography.  I searched for pictures and other undesirable things using windows explorer.  I did not come up with anything.  I am told that even though files are deleted and thrown out of the recycle bin they can still be recovered.  Since teenagers nowadays are very creative and tech savvy, how can I make sure that internet sites previously visited and downloaded files can not be recovered?  Is there a software program that can clean the drive of bad sites and files?
