Question

Computer restarting for no reason

Asked by: ArtG2521

I have a client computer that is blowing off every so often by itself right in the middle of doing something minor like a Word doc.  I hit the reset botton and saw it do it 2 more times as soon as it got to the desktop.  I shut it down and cold booted it and, for now, it seems ok.  I have some error messages for you to look at (see below).  Some messages were no longer in the temp folder to retrieve.  Is this because I chose not to send to Microsoft?  No viruses, I suspect driver issues.  Anyway, what do you make of this info and what to do?

When you first turn on the computer, does it take a while for it to start happening, or does it crash every time you do the same thing?  If it seems random, it could be overheating.  Check the inside of your PC.  How dirty is it?

I'd suggest to replace power supply if it's not just new one (even the new one can have some problems).
As austinkp suggest, first take a look at the insides of the computer if there is too much dirt. If it's not so terrible, try to replace the power supply. The cause might be for example malfunctioning fan in the PSU, too much dust there....this would explain what the problem appear suddenly.
Also consider how much devices you have connected to the computer - if you have multiple harddrives, cdroms, powerfull videocard, etc etc...maybe the powersupply is just overloaded and when all devices are being used at the same time, the power supply just gives it up.

Have you checked your event viewer? You may get a more specific answer in there.
Start/Run/ type mmc.exe
File Add/Remove snap-in
Add
Event Viewer, Add, Local Computer, Finish, Close, OK
Look at the system and application errors.
Another thing to try is find out if you have any messed up system files by running sfc /scannow
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
That will walk you through it.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus and have you recently upgraded it? I've seen this happen as well with that. If so, uninstall NAV and check the system.

It is not dirty. NAV is not installed, BitDefender is.  It could be the Power supply as it seems to be a 400w generic brand.  It happens randomly, sometimes it will run a long time before happening.  I'll try the event viewer. Never heard of sfc bit I'll try that too.  I'll let you know Sunday or Monday.

The 2nd serious error is normally hard drive related. Could be losing power and that the power supply is failing.

i would run a chkdsk /r on the partition, and also run some free hard disk diagnostics like seagate seatools diagnostic.

Here is additional info from the event viewer.  It is the systen error and the app error that went with it or close to it.  Still think it's power supply?  I don't read code like this so I don't know.

It's very difficult to pinpoint the problem from that information, but if you have an overheating CPU or dying power supply, you can get all kinds of weird errors like this.  Did you check the inside of your case to make sure it's clean and all the fans are turning?  Especially the fan on the CPU heat sink.  To ensure you're not overpowering the power supply, you can also unplug any peripherals except for keyboard, mouse, and monitor.  See if it still happens.

Also, check here:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21455091.html
That person had similar problems and I think it turned out to be bad RAM. Your winlogon.exe also crashes which, if it's not a hardware problem, could be a bad module loaded into it that crashes it.

I believe the RAM is fine having purchased it new from crucial.com, but you never know.  I'm going to replace the PS first because it is a generic clone brand.  Thanks, everyone.  I think I have enough to go from here.
