Host file not read. After reboot it's ok again.

Hello,

I have a strange situation going on at our office.
A lot of technicians that use a laptop have sometimes a problem connecting to machines using a hostname. The hostname is in the hosts file.
Ping to IP address of machine gives reply but a ping to the hostname of the machine results in error...... stating the name cannot be resolved. Technicians do not have connection to domain nor a DNS server at that time.
They do however connect to the domain with VPN at home.

Strange enough it works again after reboot of laptop !

When error occurs we tried:
Editing the hostfile....... no result
ipconfig/flushdns ....... "function failed during execution"
Restart DNS client services ....... error that a timeout did occur.



Any ideas?
