Office 2000 changes file name when Office 2007 Compatibility Pack is installed

I'm getting ready to deploy the Office 2007 compatibility pack to about 60 users who have Office 2000.  The one thing I've noticed during my testing is when a Office 2000 machine opens a Power Point or Excel 2007 file, the Office 2000 machine changes the file name to something generic like Ppt0000000.ppt or Xl0000000.xls.  Is this normal behavior?  I've combed the web trying to find an answer and don't see it.

All updates are complete on the Office 2000 machine, running XP on it and have installd the compatibility pack SP1.

No, that is not normal behavior. You might want to remove the Compatibility Pack and re-install it. Be sure that Office 2000 is fully updated prior to re-installing the Compatibility Pack.

I made sure I had all windows and office 2000 updates prior to installing the compatibility pack and the the compatibility pack service pack.  I've tried it again on a clean test unit and have found the following.  Only PowerPoint and Excel files display the name change and they are Read Only even though the original files were not created that way.  Word behaves fine.  I am able to save the 2007 files as either the 2000 format or 2007 format once the file has been opened by double clicking.

I'm beginning to think it may be normal for the PPTX and XLSX formats to behave this way if just opened by double clicking.  If I right click on the 2007 format file, Save-As, my only Save As Type option is the Office 2000 format.
Are you opening the attachments from inside of Outlook? I can double click on PowerPoint presentations and Excel workbooks and have them open without renaming. It sounds as though you may need to re-download and re-install the compatibility pack.  When you double click on the Excel.xlsx file, do you see a notice pop-up indicating that the file is being converted? What happens when you open Excel first and then open the file?

Doesn't matter where I open the Excel and Power point files, they all act the same, file is read only and file name changes.  Rememer I'm working in Office 2000.  Yes, I see the notice the first time I open an .xlsx file, but on subsequent opening (same file).  I did re-download and reinstall, both the compatibility pack and sp1 for it.
I've got a message into the Microsoft Developers to see if they can help us come up with a remedy for your solution. I tried opening the PowerPoint presentation and ran into similar problems when I used my Office 2000 machine. Sometimes the developers are a little slow in getting back to me, but I'll stick with you to help get this problem resolved, especially since I can reproduce in PowerPoint.

does it happen in Excel?  that's our bread and butter application.  Thanks for your quick responses.
I can now reproduce in Excel. :(

I did find this article which describes some of the issues...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074
And this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505 - sounds like there might be an update to the Compatibiliyt pack which we are missing. My computer is downloading updates right now.

Yes, I had found those articles already and am experiencing the problem even with the SP1 installed.  I also noticed that originally in beta, the compatibility pack wasn't going to support Office 2000.  Guess, something changed their minds.

Yes, I had found that aritcle also, but in his testing he never mentioned the change in the file name on Excel and PowerPoint 2007 files.  Also, on each test he modified the file which would prompt a request to save changes.  Makes sense. But nothing about it opening in a read only format or the file name change...but you maybe right, it just may be the way it is.  I know from my testing prior to installing the SP1, I was getting the same results  as I am after SP1.  Let me know if you find anything more.  appreciate your help.
