The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows XP boots to Black Screen, how do I recover the data?

Asked by ncoo in Windows XP Operating System, Computer Hard Drives, PC Laptops

Windows loads in to a black screen with only the mouse visible.

The window start up logo comes up and then a black screen with only the mouse pointer showing.

The mouse can be moved.

Ctr-Alt-Del does nothing.
Services don't appear to be loading, but no way to tell (doesn't sound like enough HD activity for them to be loading).

Safe Mode does the same thing, black screen with the safe mode text top left and right corner.

I think it might be something to do with the Master Boot Record.

I tried a Xubuntu LiveCD in order to recover the data before I try the recovery console, Xubutu fails to access the disk, it's says 'Operation not supported Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use.'

I can go into console and force a unmount, but I don't want to risk the data, because there is a warning with doing this.

How can I recover the data, if I have to copy it of one floppy disk at a time I don't mind. I probably only need to recover 20MBs.

I have performed a BIOS HD Test it gave the error: #2-07 fail

How do I recover the data?

I only have 256 RAM with 64 shared video. So not all LiveCDs will run.Start Free Trial
