The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Using a upgrade disk to install for a retail key.

Hello,

I recently acquired new PC's and was wanting to give an old Athlon 64 pc to my nephew.  I am wanting to surprise him with a ready to go PC loaded full of games I have beaten already etc..  I had my sister download Jellybean Software and grab his XP Pro SP2 key for me.  My Brother-in-law is serving in Korea so I dont really have anyone there besides my sister to help me and she is non comp friendly.

All of my machines were upgrades from 98, so I don't have a retail XP Pro Disk, but a Upgrade disk, then I usually slap 98 disk in and do clean install from there.

However, on the computer I am giving my nephew, when I enter in the product key my sister sent me from JellyBean software, it says key is invalid.  So I went ahead and used my key just to complete install but wont activate it until I get this resolved.  Then I tried using Jellybean to change the key from mine to his, it gives an error.

Now this computer came from Korea when my brother-in-law was there a while ago, so it could very well have pirated XP Pro, I am not ruling that out.  If thats the case I have a legit xp Home I could slap on there, but Id rather save that if I can.

My questions:

1st:  Could trying to use a retail key during an install with an upgrade disk be causing the issues?

2nd:If it is legal software and its the upgrade disk causing the trouble what options do I have? Could I do a repair with his retail disk and then use jelly bean to change key?

I am hoping a solution can be found so that I can continue installing games and object desktop themes before I leave.  Id rather arrive with a fully loaded computer with custom themes and not have to spend any of the 2 days Im visiting working on computers lol

As always your help is appreciated,

Scott Cottrill
