Question

Exchange not processing external mail

Asked by: goliveuk

Hello, on a machine running windows 2003 SBS SP2, and exchange with GFI, there is a problem with processing external mail for only one user. When somebody inside the company sent an email to that person it is been processed Ok, but not the external emails. When I open the GFI monitor it says that the test email is received and processed ok, but nothing comes to the user inbox.

Have you double checked the users external smtp address to make sure it is correct? Also have you tried message tracking in exchange to see if it was delivered to the mailbox?

The external smtp is correct, how to track the message in exchange?

by: epohlPosted on 2008-03-26 at 07:39:51ID: 21212097

In Exchange System Manager, under tools, message tracking center. I don't think this is enabled by default in SBS 2003 so you may have to enable it.

View this article under message tracking for instructions on enabling it.

do a telnet localhost on port 25 on the exchange server.

Drop and email (self email) to that user to confirm if he/she gets it.

If he/she gets the email then your server is ok.

Try disabling GFI, i feel it has a whitelist / blacklist setting that may cause the issue.

I used message tracking center to find my test email and here are the results

by: amrlotusPosted on 2008-03-26 at 07:57:28ID: 21212305

as you can read the engine failed to deliver the message you might want to check the following
1-disable GFI might be the cause of the problem for this user
2-check the while list in GFI
3-check what the contents of the mail might have sex or spam and that is the reason it is not being delivered
4-remove the user and create a new one

I see the message you tracked did in fact have SPAM in the subject line. This problem can be caused by GFI. Disabling GFI and testing should be tried as mentioned by amriotus and exchgen above.

Manual method to disable GFI is to look for a file called stop_snks.cmd

If this resolves the problem, just call GFI and ask them how to fix it.
