Greetings all -
I have an issue that I'm sure there's a legitimate answer to but I don't know it. I have a bunch of workstations that are not registering with my DNS servers (Server 2003 R2 DC's). The vast majority of my workstations register, but some do not. I've found the common denominator between the ones that work and the ones that don't.
The workstations that do not register are ones that are set up for DHCP by default and have an Alternate Configuration specified. Now...an important point is that I do *NOT* yet have any DHCP servers set up. That will be rolled out in my enterprise shortly. For the time being, all my workstation use static IPs but some of the workstations need to be setup to attempt DHCP first because they travel to other networks that support DHCP.
But for my network, when I connect a machine that is setup for DHCP by default, it obviously can't obtain a DHCP address so it falls to the Alternate Configuration. When it does this, either it doesn't register with the DNS server or the DNS server is rejecting the registration. Why does this happen? If I reconfigure the NIC to use all static information from the git-go, it registers perfectly.
What's up here? Thanks in advance!
