Question

windows switch itself offf only at night

Asked by: brillox

I am going crazy....

I have an XP machine SP2 PRO with ALL the updates installed .... the machine turn itself off at night time.. no log of errors in the event viewer; I switched off the "restart machine i the evnt of crash", no blue screen, and no restart in safe mode... it is like there is an auto switch enabled somewhere !! The starnge thing is that in order to switch on again, I have to unplug the power cable and re-plug it... I already purchased and installed a new ram, graphic card, and PCU fan... also re.installed XP... no joy before I am going to buy a new motherborad (  I am thinking to a possible short circuit somewhere) any suggestion?

what bugs me is that during day time it works without any problem at all.. Ah.. I also installed speedfan to test temperatures and they are fine (cpu is around 35 celsius).

First thing first. as u told that you even reinstalled the XP. So eliminate the Windows issues for a while.

How is your setup. i mean the Power connections,
do you have a surge protector or any UPS or is it connecting to a live power outlet.
Second thing. Keep in mind ....
Calculate the power Wattage Specified on the power supply and the hardware u have in your system.
make sure you are not exceeding the power usage.
and if u don't know how to calculate the power consumption of your computer let me know.

below a full summary of the PC.  I connect directly to the PC, no UPS

I have a 450 W Power Supply.

If I still have to calculate the power consumption, then I do need your help :-)

@brillox:

>> I calculated your power consumption according to the specifications you provided to me. its all good.

here is the link for the wattage calculation why don't you calculate again and tell me.
according to me your consumption should be around 330 Watts. anyways calculate again as you know what u have on your system like any external hardware etc......

and one more thing is it OK for you to check your commuter with another power supply.
I am stressing you on power supply because we face lot more problems like this just due to the PSU malfunction.
once we are clear then we will move to BIOS

go through this link to calculate the wattage consumption of your PC

http://extreme.outervision.com/powercalc.jsp

by: brilloxPosted on 2008-04-08 at 02:11:11ID: 21303526

It gives me 339 w

I do not have another power supply and I am at work now. I can buy one this afternoon (UK time) and try it this evening once at home. However I can rdp into my machine right now.

by: brilloxPosted on 2008-04-08 at 02:13:29ID: 21303538

but WHY it stud down ONLY at night time....  ?? (in your opinion)

by: gnurlPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:04:48ID: 21303740

Just a silly question?
Does the system shutdown always at the same time?
Did you check scheduled tasks?
Which programs run during night? Any download managers with "shutdown when complete" or something else?

by: intkouserPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:05:32ID: 21303744

>> In the night time the chances of the power fluctuation are more.
there is an option in the BIOS.
 Power Failure State.
Why don't you check this option and change to Power On State. and will see what happens

Don't buy the PSU. Still i wana seee whats on the BIOS

by: brilloxPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:11:36ID: 21303755

Hi gnurl,

your question is not silly..  I did check the scheduled task yesterday evening and it was clear.

I do not have download managers ; only programs that runs at night is an antivirus scan (pcTools) . Just to be absolutely sure, I will switch it off this evening.

Ok intkouser, I will change the bios option this afternoon once back at home and I will notify you once this is done.

there is any way to print out bios options for you to see it, otherwise let me know what you are interested in and I will log for you

by: flubbsterPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:37:47ID: 21303825

my two cents... strange in appearance, but maybe not so strange at all. As electronics age, component values change. Capacitors begin to leak. Peak power consumption increases. Peak power output drops, with more of it being presented as a "noisy" source. Due to the aging process, the typical power draw can increase signifiantly from original configuration. Assuming the calculations posted were correct, let us assume that you are drawing (calculated) 350 watts. Adding 10% normal draw to mfg specs, you are around 385 watts. Next, aging, capacitor leakage, component tolerances, and noise development within the supply can easily add another 20-30% to total power consumption. Based on this, you are looking at a potential draw, based on what is being utilized at any one time, of 460-495 watts. Potentially exceeding the rating of your PSU. Add in the fact that at night the power being supplied to your home will change drastically due to increased demand, noise due to thousands of appliances being used simultaneously, and BEMF throwing spikes and noise all over the place, I think your supply is going into shutdown mode to protect itself. Bottom line, You should replace the supply, or, in the interim, disconnect one or two devices to lower the draw.

(note: although I spend a great deal of time with IT and computer issues, my primary occupation is designing systems used to build and test Missile Guidance Systems for the Poseidon and Trident Missile Program. Just thought I'd throw that in so you know I am speaking from experience when it comes to power issues.)

Good Luck!!

by: brilloxPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:50:53ID: 21303882

Hi flubbster,Your words are convincing and considering the low cost of a 500 Watt Power sullply (24 GBP) I may by one; it is alwasys good to have a spare one around anyway. I do want to try also Intkouser suggestion.

So rather that apply both solution ; I will proceed with order starting this evening with a bios change and if tomorrow morning I do find the PC off, then I will replace the Power Supply.

Do you guys agree with this plan ?

by the way flubbster... VERY interesting job !!

by: flubbsterPosted on 2008-04-08 at 03:58:18ID: 21303921

Absolutley... by all means check/change the BIOS setting. If that solves your immediate problem, that's great!!

Having said that, I would still recommend that you purchase a more powerful supply for the long term. As I said, based on the calculations and your system requirements, you are on the hairy edge. A standard used for quick reference is to always design to 80% maximum specification. Without taking into consideration age, decay, and so on, based on a calculated 350W, 450x.8=360W... already exceeding... :)

good luck!

The option in BIOS is
Enter the BIOS setup.
Select POWER option
Select the Power Loss State

Many thanks for your time. I have to admit that I could not wait another day so I did changed the option in the BIOS and I have also changed the power supply which is now a 600 Watts. THerefore we will never know exactly what was the cause of the problem, but it has been solved.
