svchost.exe CPU hog
svchost.exe seems to run whenever it wants, usually when I have work to do. I read the archives but made only a bit of sense of it.
Is there a way to control this process?
I downloaded uniblue's Registry Checker. It found 306 registry errors but didn't tell me anything about svchost.exe. jv16 Registry Cleaner found the normal 40 registry errors.
any guidance on next steps is greatly appreciated.

Use something like Process Explorer to see which instance of svchost.exe is hogging.
There is one (at least) for each type of user (network, local, system). That will narrow it down to which service (or set of services) which is causing the problem.
Also, when it is busy, you should be able to see what is being accessed to help you narrow it down.

In Windows XP, you can get a list of the running services for each of the mutiple instances of svchost that are running on your machine by going to Start | Run | type "CMD" | click OK. Type "tasklist /svc" (sans quotes) and then press Enter. Now you will have a list of every DLL running under each svchost.exe instance.

Thanks for the help. Finally I got to this yesterday. I used Process Manager to see that Windows Update was taking up the CPU under svchost.exe. I disabled Window Update and so far all is well so far. If it reappears, I'll try some of the other suggestions in the various knowledge base entries you provided.
Make sure you manually run Windows Update via IE on a regular basis if you are worried about updates.
That's just one reason svchost.exe hogs CPU time. Svchost.exe is a wrapper process for tons of system services that could also be causing the problem.
