Can't open any programs. Possible malware or virus issue

Hi,

I am having a serious problem i cant seem to fix on my own! i did some searches but couldn't find a solution

I was doing some work on my main PC (windows XP sp2)
I saw a CMD box pop up with the word REG at the end...and all these other cmd prompt boxes.. so i unplugged my modem .i couldnt open any programs up.. so i rebooted...l after i rebooted i got got all these cmd prompt pop ups that had the follwing path in the title bar of the Cmd prompt window

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\spools.exe

I cant open any programs at all either.. i have tried safe mode, no luck..

When i try to open a program.,, a cmd prompt window comes up with the path i just pasted above..

if i click a desktop shortcut. same deal get the path of that shortcut with the .lnk at the end

..i cant even run HIJACKTHIS or Combo fix in regular or safe mode...

anyone have any suggestions? i am desperate has i have alot of work to do.. i am using a old laptop rightnow to get online and research this. but no luck
