How to remove a corrupt print driver

I have a corrupt print driver that I am trying to remove from my XP Pro machine.  Lexmark C762

I have tried to remove it through the server properties>Drivers>remove driver interface, no dice.  Same for the replace option in that same place.  
I tried Safe Mode but the service is disable and will not launch under safe mode, nor can I see my network pritners (yes this is on a windows 2003 network)

How else can I get these drivers off this box and replace them from scratch?

One more thing.  It reports the the driver is in use so I can't remove it as one normally would either.  I just tried to delete the files from the system32\drivers\spool folder but it won't let me do that either.  I do have admin rights...

please help

Try this little trick. I have used it to remove stubborn printer drivers before. Install a dummy driver. Pick a very common printer/driver and let xp install it. Make it the default printer. As soon as that is done, xp unloads all the drivers for your old one. Reboot and unistall/delete the drivers in question. Then make any changes you like regarding the actual printer.

The hard way to do it is to stop the print spooler service, and then go into windows\system32\drivers\w32x86 and manually delete the driver from there - delete the lot and you'll merely have to re-install all printers, not a big deal and quite simple.

As always - rather than deleting, move the files to another directory just in case this messes something up, and you can put them all back!

Ok so I had to remove all of the profiles from the machine and then the drivers.  THat was the only way I could get around it.  I didn't want to rip files out at the source, always try to find another way.

Thank you for your help, you certainly steered me in the right direction.
