Question

Logon Screen Home Edition Disapear

Asked by: Corey_819

Hello and how are things? Okay I have done a lot of research on this issue and I have come to terms that no one had a clear cut answer to fixing the problem other than restoring the OS. I have a person who ran into the issue where she has XP Home Edition SP2. When she boots she gets the XP logon screen and where the User icons are supposed to be on the right. However, they are gone. Even in safe  mode they are gone. Now, I can hit the CTRL-ALT-DELET to get to the classic windows Network logon screen but Administrator is not able to log in due to acount acitvity disabled. I even tried Administrator in safe mode and it tells me local policy does not permit logon. I seen many ideas of restoring the login file using Windows XP Recovery which I did try. Nothing, I am just curious has anyone came up with a reason as to why this happen and how to solve the problem other than doing a restore of the OS? Thanks :)

I had the same problem on a familiy members pc.....I was quite perplexed it how in the world the entier login would just dissapear...
I never found an answer I am sorry to say...but I made sure when I finished restoring that machine....that the appropriate virus and malware utilities were in place..

spybot, windows defender, and Avast.....havent had any problems since.

One thing I never tried...thinking back...was to get a boot disk....linux disk..and bypass windows all together...this would get you into the filestructure of windows...

Another option...is to take out the harddrive...and put it in another machine....as a secondary hardrive...you can atleast then look at the files..and see what might be wrong..and then at the very least recover your data

No xpsavy, I tried the normal user acount, guest, which I knew was disabled with SP2, and Administrator. No other accounts were created.

First method
1) Boot using Knoppix CD copy the SAM file and put it in another machine and find out the password , i dont beleive the admin account is locked the user must have forgot the password , once get the password boot into using that password .

Second method
2) Start repair installation at 36th minute press Ctrl +F10 you will get command prompt from there type nusrmgr.cpl create account or reset password , reboot the machine or continue with the installation

Corey 819,

I never use the Welcome Screen:
Turn Off The XP Welcome Screen
Start > Control Panel > User Accounts

2) Select "Change the way users log on or off"

3) Uncheck the "Welcome Screen" option

4) Click "Apply Options"

5) The settings will take effect when you log off.

The "Log On" option also changes the way "Ctrl Alt Del" works...

Under the "Welcome Screen" option you are taken into the "Task Manager" dialog box.

Under the "Log On Screen" you are given the Windows Security dialog box, which gives you far more options!

The "Log On Screen" also renames "Turn Off Computer" on the Start menu to "Shut Down".

The other main feature you get is the ability to log on to ANY user account, whereas under the "Welcome Screen" you can NOT access hidden users.

So, as you can see there are benefits to using the "Log On Screen" over the "Welcome Screen" option.
