The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need to remove WinXP device driver from unbootable drive

Tags: remove blue screen WinXP device driver
I have a drive with Windows XP installed.  The drive will not boot; I get the blue screen, then an auto-reboot. I know the culprit is the video card device driver (for the Nvidia Geforce 7200gs).

I tried removing the add-in video card and using instead the on-board video but it doesn't help.

I can access the entire problem drive if I make it a slave and boot to another drive first instead.

QUESTION: Once I have access to the failing Windows installation is there any file I can delete that would remove the bad driver? - I would be OK with reinstalling ALL drivers if I had to!

Thx all,
Rich

if the problem is with video card drivers, you can easily boot in safemode to unisntall the card's drivers
because safemode doesn't load the video card drivers.
or you can even hook another card if its not a laptop

you can boot from a live cd like :
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.0CD-2006-12-30-EN.iso      Knoppix
www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/                                     BartPe

then look for the driver, and delete it (or it's folder)
do a search for nvidia, or geforce to locate them

I tried that... No good...

Once this driver gets installed that windows installation no longer boots, even to SAFE mode. Even If I boot to the original XP install disk that windows install is unreachable.  The install gets to a point then the blue screen appears and the pc reboots.

SO -What else did I do beside try safe mode?

I put another bootable XP hard drive into that rig and boot... (This drive has just a standard VGA driver on it.)  Now I can see, and file manage, the whole other drive, the one with the bad windows install that will not boot.  Check disk runs without error.

Now if I install the Nvidia Geforce 7200gs video driver onto that new drive the same thing happens. Wont boot, cant reinstall XP there.

Removing the Nvidia Geforce 7200gs card does not help!!!

SO, I can get access to the drive to delete any file I want but cannot boot to it (or reinstall onto it).

All I want to do is to find out what files I can delete to kill any non-standard video driver on XP.

Thx RG

>>  Now if I install the Nvidia Geforce 7200gs video driver onto that new drive the same thing happen  <<  that's normal, the registry stays unchanged on that drive...
try a system restore from recovery console : http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1167895,00.html

Nah. Anytime the original install CD reaches out to the hard drive ...  blue screen.  I tried the Recovery Console method too, same thing.

All I want to do is delete all drivers from the boot hard drive.

I can install another hard drive as master, slave the original hard drive, and explorer the entire original hard drive.

Thx
