The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Installing XP on a notebook SATA drive using a storage driver floppy

Hi

Having difficulty with a couple of laptops which have come preinstalled with vista, but we want to downgrade them to XP Pro.

I have attained storage drivers from manufacturer websites (in both cases Intel SATA AHCI controller driver) and created floppies.  Supplied using F6 during setup, in both cases drive then recognised & formatted.  However, when it comes to the stage of copying files from cd to hard drive, it ceases and prompts me to insert the disk labelled "Intel Matrix Storage manager Driver".  Presumably it means the same floppy I have previously used, however it will not accept the floppy.  In fact, even if I switch the floppy disk for another and hit enter, nothing happens.  I think the floppy drive is not being detected at this point.

I must point out that these are both laptops (one Toshiba and one Compaq) without internal floppy drives, so an external usb floppy is being used.

Any ideas on how I can get around this?  I have tried formatting the hard drive fat32, copying the xp cd to it, booting from a dos diskette and manually installing by running i386\winnt, which works so far (gets further than by booting from cd), but once you do reboot after copying files it then complains about an invalid boot table.

Pulling my hair out here, surely it must be possible to get XP on these laptops?
