Alternatively, there's often a way of telling the graphics driver directly which outputs it should be using--unfortunately, this is usually specific to whatever graphics driver you have installed. Try clicking the Advanced button in the Display Properties Settings tab and see if anything in there looks likely.

Have you tried using the CRT/LCD key? On my Dell it would be (FUNCTION)(F8)?
This should cycle through the output modes, usually... LAPTOP / OUTPUT PORT / BOTH
