The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The problem (normally) is with the DLL's that a program installs within the OS.
I found a reference to this within EE.

You could try cloning the drive so the two machines have identical content (not likely to be successful if you have different hardware though), otherwise although there are programs out there that claim to do what you are asking they are time consuming and often involve capturing the changes made with an install so you need to go through the motions of a full installation anyway!  It is likely that it would still be quicker to install manually.

I'm intrigued though, is there no way to shorten the update process? Could you let us know what the program is? It may be there is someone here who can show you how to install it faster.

Not only are DLLs and common files copied to the drive but critical changes are made to the registry. The only way to ensure all this is done is to re-install - and thats before we go down the route of questioning the legality co such an an operation and wether it would contravine licence agreements.

It would be helpful to know what applications you are trying to copy/move?

Most of the comments so far in here are correct, Windows applications place DLL resource files in a shared area and they write entries in the registry... however, most games do not.

As you've posted this in the Gamers area, I assume you're trying to copy game installations? Something like World of Warcraft?

If so, you might be in luck. Most games are fairly tidy and place all their files inside their own directory. To copy World of Warcraft for example, you can just copy the fully patched client directory (usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft ) over to the new PC and manually create a shortcut to the program launcher.exe

It depends on the program, but some like World of Warcraft, you can just copy/paste the whole dir from one pc to another. When I format and am happy with the current setup of WoW, I just copy it to a networked computer then copy it back ^^.

Well you could always use WINRAR and compress the files you want to transfer and then upload it to something like mediafire and then redownload them on your other computer.
That or you could use an USB drive and just copy the whole program over to your newly built computer.
Hope this helps. Cheer
