Customer has a Compaq laptop running XP SP1. For the last year or so he has connected to his simple XP network and the internet using a SMC USB network adapter, because he said his built-in network connection did not work. Now neither of them work. So, I have disabled those two and installed a new SMC USB adapter. And, when that didn't work, I uninstalled that and tried a Linksys USB adapter....and I'm having the same problems with both. The tcp/ip settings are set for automatic, but they always go to the 169...private addresses, which do me no good. The other computers on the network are all in the range of 192.168.1.x, and if I hard code the tcp/ip settings to 192.168.1.33, for example, then I can ping their server...but I still cannot get on the internet.
I know the network cable connection is good, because I can connect it to two other computers in the office and work just fine. One of the computers provides this info when I do ipconfig/all:
Dhcp enabled...no
IP address...192.168.1.88
Subnet mask...255.255.255.0
Default gateway...192.168.1.1
DNS servers...192.168.1.1
This particular computer has the IP addresses hardcoded. But another one I tried--where they are NOT hardcoded--provided similar address info, showing dhcp enabled.
I have tried automatic IP settings, and I've tried hardcoding them as follows:
192.168.1.33
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.1
Another thing that seems strange...anytime I click on "repair" on the network connection, it immediately fails, saying it failed on the step "renewing IP address".
They do not appear to have any firewall, and being SP1, I assume it does not have the usual XP firewall. I have cleared cache and history and cookies. I have removed everything from msconfig.
What can I try next? TIA
