I have done that, several times. The default is Automatic startup. Something is turning the service off and setting it to Manual, either at shutdown or else during the boot up. Any ideas?

How do I keep Smartcard service started and automatic
I am running X SP2. Something keeps setting my Smartcard service to manual and shutting it down. I set the service to automatic and start it. Things are fine. After a reboot it is manual and stopped. I need the service. Any idea how to keep it automatically started? This appears to be a new "feature". The only SW I've installed recently has been Outlook 2007.

I am trying something else to try to keep the service started automatically. Under the Smardcard services dialog window there is a tab called Recovery. Underneath are actions to take for first, second, and third failures. All were set to take no action. I set all three to Restart the Service after 1 minute. I'll let you know if that works. And I'll see if there is something on the Internet related to a registry setting.

Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, Rightclick the service name, choose properties and choose Automatic startup type.
Or if it is not a service, then create a shortcut of the program (rightclick the program executable and choose create shortcut), then copy the shortcut to the startup folder (All Programs -> Startup)
