Installing Access 97 on XP sp 2

I need to install Access '97 on a workstation running WIndows XP (SP2). I previously installed Office 2007. The Office 97 installation fails quickly (before CD key) saying "Office 97 has already been installed on several oter computers" (which is not the case!)
I removed all of Office 2007 and tried again, same result. Can anyone suggest why this is happening, I've always been able to "dual install" Access 97 and Access 2003 prior to this workstation.

Hi David,

Sounds like a manual clean-up of Office 2007 is in order.  This KB article should help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 (How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature)

When using older versions of Office on the same computer with newer versions, you have to keep in mind that you need to install them from oldest to newest, or there will be compatibility issues.  You can't install an older version of Office on a computer when an newer one is present, you need to unistall the newest first.

Thanks for this, I'll see if the manual clean-up works (but I kind of already tried it)!
Just for info, I have back-installed Access '97 *many* times on systems with Office 2000/2003 already installed - but not with Office 2007. it's not ideal, and you often get the quirky Hatten TTF font issue, but it can be done. But agreed not the best way in an ideal world. But could this be an issue specific to Office 2007? If so a complete uninstall and cleanup should surely fix it! :)

Yep, need to de-gunk the stuff left over from those two installs.  It won't be pretty, and I certainly don't evny you, but it should get things back in working order.

Mmm... As for 2003 before 97, interesting.  The KB article that I read had a good explaination for doing it in that order and it certainly makes sense but if you can pull it off, more power to you.

Office 2007 is a major change compared to previous Office upgrades, so there's bound to be a lot more conflicting code involved.
